What is Fluoride?

Fluoride is a mineral that is naturally found in water as well as some foods. It is also added to the water supply in most areas, so many people are taking in fluoride without even realizing it. When teeth are exposed to a sufficient amount of fluoride, the enamel is strengthened and therefore more resistant to cavities.

What are Fluoride Treatments?

In-office fluoride treatments are quick and painless. The fluoride is simply applied to the teeth and allowed to remain for a couple minutes. In addition, patients may be given extra fluoride supplements to further strengthen enamel. With these fast and easy treatments, patients can avoid expensive, painful, destructive tooth decay.

Why are Fluoride Treatments Necessary?

Fluoride treatments are necessary because they work against the demineralization process, which takes place each day as acids attack tooth enamel. Minerals, including fluoride, help rebuild the enamel’s strength.

Who Should Get This Dental Treatment?

Patients of all ages can greatly benefit from fluoride treatments. However, it is most important for children to be exposed to an adequate amount of fluoride as their primary and adult teeth come in. Fluoride treatments are a fast and easy way to help prevent cavities.
